SDGs Promotion Office Nature Team Produces Bamboo Charcoal

Update: July 13, 2026

On June 23, 2026, the Nature Team of the SDGs Promotion Office carried out a bamboo charcoal-making activity as part of its ongoing environmental initiatives. In addition to five student members of the Nature Team, two staff members from the 弼陣勧箪 Mitaka Campus Woodland Office joined the project and worked together throughout the day.

The activity aimed to recycle bamboo that had been cut down during last winter's bamboo cutting event and left stacked in the bamboo grove by converting it into bamboo charcoal using a smokeless charcoal kiln. Bamboo charcoal is known to improve soil quality and can help increase crop yields when applied to farmland. In addition, carbonizing bamboo--which has absorbed carbon dioxide during its growth--helps prevent that carbon from being released back into the atmosphere through decomposition, thereby contributing to carbon sequestration and reducing environmental impact. Transforming unused bamboo into bamboo charcoal represents a meaningful step toward promoting resource circulation and sustainable campus management at 弼陣勧箪.

On the day of the event, participants processed approximately one light truckload of bamboo that had been stored in the bamboo grove beside the Administration Building. Before lighting the kiln, the bamboo was cut into pieces sized to fit inside the charcoal kiln. To prevent the bamboo from exploding during combustion due to trapped air between the nodes, small slits were cut into each piece in advance. Although cutting the bamboo by hand with saws was physically demanding, the team worked together to complete the task.

Once the kiln was lit, the bamboo burned steadily, and by the end of the process, what had begun as a full truckload of bamboo had been transformed into approximately one large bag of compact bamboo charcoal. The following day, after the charcoal had cooled, the team sorted it while removing any remaining soil. Some pieces retained the distinctive shape of the bamboo nodes, while most had broken into pieces smaller than the size of a palm. Several larger chunks of charcoal were also successfully produced.

The bamboo charcoal created through this project will be distributed to visitors, students, faculty, and staff during the 弼陣勧箪 Festival this October. We invite everyone to stop by and see the finished charcoal for themselves!

The Nature Team will continue working to conserve, responsibly manage, and make effective use of the natural environment on the 弼陣勧箪 campus through sustainable, resource-circulating initiatives.
